Caring Starts By Seeing Through God’s Eyes

The next time you walk across your school campus or on the streets of your city and observe people ask yourself,  “How does God view them right now?’

The answer to that question is at the heart of caring. Caring starts by seeing through God’s eyes.

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” Genesis 1:27

Every person on your campus is in fact an image barrier of God. The same God you know and serve is the One whose image is stamped on every person you meet and see. When they were in their mother’s womb, God knew them, just as he knows you. They are fearfully and wonderfully made.

God deeply cares about the value and dignity of every person around you, and he communicates it with love and forgiveness (Romans 5:8), and he has a plan for each of their lives. Knowing this, we are compelled to care as He does.

Caring requires humility…

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,  not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. Philippians 2:3-4

Caring can mean…

  • Stepping out of spaces that are comfortable and into spaces that can be uncomfortable. Consider that there are students on your campus that are popular and unpopular, rich and poor, cool and not so cool, and possibly many different ethnicities, and they all need care.
  • When we care for someone we put the mission God has given us above what others think. “They” can disapprove of our care for a person, but God highly approves and blesses.
  • Caring is listening, supporting emotionally, tutoring a school subject, feeding someone who is hungry, helping restore a relationship, meeting physical needs, introducing someone to Jesus.

Caring is a deep concern for the eternal destiny of others…

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” John 3:16-17

The greatest act of care is to gently lead someone to a relationship with Christ.

Caring requires God’s Spirit…

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…” Gal 5:22

God does not ask us to do something that he does not provide the help and power to accomplish. Ask Him to give you the fruit of His Spirit as you reach out to care and share.

When you care about others, you are humbly saying, “I am affirming your value, purpose and dignity that has been given to you by God. I care about your life now and for eternity.”

Pray, care, share – it is God’s plan for reaching students and schools.
